EAC reactivates capital markets committee to advance regional monetary integration
The East African Community has reactivated its Capital Markets Sub-Committee, renewing efforts to advance regional financial market integration as Partner States prepare for the East African Monetary Union.
The announcement, published on 21 September 2026, confirms the reactivation of the sub-committee under the EAC's Capital Markets, Insurance and Pensions Committee (CMIPC).
The sub-committee provides a regional mechanism for coordinating capital markets integration initiatives among EAC Partner States. Its work is relevant to efforts to improve cooperation between national financial markets and support the development of a more integrated regional financial system.
Capital markets can help businesses and governments mobilise longer-term financing for investment, infrastructure and economic development. Greater regional integration can also create opportunities for investors and issuers to access a broader pool of capital, subject to national regulatory frameworks and market conditions.
The EAC's monetary union agenda provides the wider policy context for the renewed committee activity. Financial sector coordination is among the institutional areas relevant to deeper economic integration between Partner States.
The announcement does not provide a new financing commitment or specify a timetable for completing capital markets integration. It does, however, establish the reactivation of the sub-committee as a concrete institutional development in the region's financial integration process.
