EAC Calls for New-Generation Border Reforms Following Monitoring Mission to Namanga and Lungalunga One Stop Border Posts

ARUSHA — 20 July 2026

Following a monitoring mission to the Namanga and Horohoro/Lungalunga One Stop Border Posts, the East African Community has called for new-generation border reforms to modernise border operations, citing that regional trade is growing and East Africa's borders must evolve to keep pace.

The EAC's call comes against a backdrop of significant regional trade growth. Trade within the East African Community reached 46.3 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2026 alone. The Namanga border post sits on the Kenya-Tanzania boundary and is one of the busiest crossing points in the region, handling significant volumes of goods transit between the Port of Mombasa and landlocked EAC partner states.

The EAC's monitoring mission findings and the call for new-generation reforms align with the bloc's broader trade facilitation agenda set at the 25th Extraordinary Summit, which directed the removal of non-tariff barriers and the strengthening of One Stop Border Post operations across the region. The EAC Secretariat has not yet released the full monitoring report but the statement signals a forthcoming policy directive on border infrastructure and procedures modernisation.
