EAC and UN Agencies Move to Formalise Regional Health and Development Partnership
The East African Community (EAC) and four United Nations agencies have agreed to establish a structured partnership framework to strengthen coordination and joint action on health and development priorities across East Africa.
The agreement was reached during a high level meeting at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha between the EAC Secretariat and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
The proposed framework is intended to consolidate existing cooperation and provide a more coordinated mechanism for translating regional priorities into practical interventions. Areas highlighted include reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, HIV, gender, youth health and universal health coverage.
The EAC Secretary General called for the framework to be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, with the process expected to be completed within three months. The meeting also identified sustainable financing and supportive policy and legal environments as important requirements for improving health outcomes and advancing inclusive development.
The initiative is significant for regional development because it seeks to align the EAC, UN agencies and Partner States around shared health and human capital priorities rather than relying solely on individual country programmes. The organisations have already collaborated through regional forums, health data initiatives and development of minimum standards for integrated health services.
