EAC and Germany Launch Second AI Challenge to Equip 20,000 East Africans

ARUSHA, Tanzania — 12 August 2026

The East African Community and the Government of Germany have launched the second edition of the EAC Artificial Intelligence Challenge, targeting 20,000 people across the region with AI skills and opportunities to develop technology solutions for East Africa's development challenges.

The initiative, known as AI4EAC, will provide opportunities for students, researchers and entrepreneurs across all EAC Partner States to build practical capabilities in artificial intelligence. The programme was formally announced at EAC headquarters in Arusha on 12 August.

The initiative places skills development alongside innovation, reflecting the growing importance of AI to productivity, public services, business and economic transformation.

For East Africa, the timing is significant. Governments and development partners are increasingly investing in digital public infrastructure, digital trade and technology-enabled services, but shortages of specialised digital skills remain a constraint to wider adoption.

The challenge also creates a regional platform for young people and researchers to apply AI to problems specific to East African economies and communities rather than focusing exclusively on imported technology applications.

The regional approach matters. A coordinated skills and innovation programme can potentially support knowledge exchange across borders while strengthening the human capital required for the EAC's emerging digital economy.

The development challenge will be ensuring that AI skills translate into usable products, enterprises, public-sector applications and employment opportunities. Access also needs to extend beyond established technology hubs so that young people and institutions in less-connected communities can participate.

For the EAC, AI4EAC represents an investment not simply in technology adoption but in the regional capabilities needed to shape and use emerging technologies for development.
