DRC strengthens accountability over Ebola response funding
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is strengthening financial transparency and accountability around resources mobilised for the country's Ebola response, with support from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
Africa CDC issued the statement on 4 October following a position by the DRC Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare calling for stronger transparency, traceability and accountability in management of Ebola-response resources.
The development follows a high-level meeting held on 5 August under President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, where stronger coordination and financial accountability were identified as priorities.
Africa CDC said it has continued to call for comprehensive tracking of resources dedicated to the response to ensure that funding reaches affected communities, health facilities and frontline responders.
The issue is particularly important during large disease emergencies, when substantial resources can move rapidly between governments, international organisations and implementing partners. Transparent financial systems can help governments and donors establish whether resources are reaching the intended response activities.
The current Ebola outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo virus, has affected communities in northeastern DRC, with response operations involving national authorities, WHO, Africa CDC and other partners.
The focus on financial accountability adds an institutional dimension to the health response. Alongside disease surveillance, treatment, vaccination and community engagement, effective management of emergency resources is critical to maintaining public confidence and ensuring that available financing translates into services.
Africa CDC's statement supports the government's position and signals continued continental-level attention to accountability in health-emergency financing.
