DRC Ebola Outbreak Surpasses 7,250 Confirmed Cases as Transmission Continues in Seven Provinces
Kinshasha, DRC — 15 September 2026
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reports that the Democratic Republic of the Congo recorded 7,258 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,510 related deaths as of data compiled through 13 September, with 905 patients currently hospitalised in isolation. This represents an increase of 58 new confirmed cases and 35 deaths since the previous reporting period, with new cases concentrated in Ituri (44), North Kivu (12) and Haut Uélé (2) provinces.
Of those infected with Bundibugyo virus, 1,726 patients have recovered, and 78.6 percent of identified case contacts remain under active follow-up across affected provinces. A separate government epidemiological report placed the overall case fatality rate at 48.4 percent, while noting an overall downward trend in transmission despite continued spread in several provinces.
The outbreak, confirmed in Ituri Province in May 2026, remains the largest and fastest-moving Ebola epidemic on record after the West African epidemic of 2014 to 2016. It continues to draw sustained international response coordination, including WHO-led surveillance, treatment capacity expansion and vaccine trial support across the affected health zones.
