DRC activates emergency roadmap to break Ebola transmission in Ituri

Bunia, 16 July 2026

The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and response partners activated an emergency delivery roadmap intended to break transmission of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, placing immediate deadlines and clear operational responsibility behind measures including early detection, complete contact follow up, rapid access to care, protection of health workers and community engagement. The roadmap was adopted during a strategic review chaired by Roger Kamba, the country's Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, in the presence of Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya.

As of 13 July, the country had reported 2,011 confirmed cases, 754 deaths and 366 recoveries, with 54 new confirmed cases and 28 deaths reported in the latest 24 hour period at the time. The outbreak affects 45 health zones across five provinces, with Ituri accounting for almost 90 percent of confirmed cases and continued expansion in Haut Uele. South Kivu has recorded 48 consecutive days without a new confirmed case.

Africa CDC said the response is now operating with substantially greater capacity than at the outbreak's start, with 11 laboratories functioning, national testing capacity exceeding 2,000 tests per day, sequencing available in Bunia, and 22 Ebola treatment centres and seven transit centres providing more than 700 beds nationally.
