African Union Convenes 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting with RECs in El Alamein
EL ALAMEIN, EGYPT, 27 June 2026
The African Union convened the 8th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the AU Commission and the Chairpersons of the continent's eight recognised Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms in El Alamein, Egypt, on 27 June, the principal continental forum for aligning AU and REC agendas.
The East African Community, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, and the Southern African Development Community each participated. The meeting was preceded by the 49th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council held on 24 and 25 June in El Alamein. The meeting takes place under the AU Theme of the Year 2026: "Ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063."
Agenda items of direct relevance to East Africa include the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, cross-border security coordination in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa, the ongoing humanitarian situation in South Sudan, the Ebola outbreak response, the peace process in Sudan, and food system security risks arising from geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East. The AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf presided over the meeting.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting was established in 2017 as the principal coordination mechanism between the AU Bureau of the Assembly and REC Chairpersons, replacing the June and July summits. Its outcomes directly shape the continental integration agenda and policy coordination framework for the second half of the year.
