African Development Bank and United Nations deepen cooperation on peace and resilience
The African Development Bank Group and the United Nations have signed a new agreement to strengthen joint action on peacebuilding, crisis prevention and sustainable development across Africa.
The Letter of Intent on Strategic Cooperation on Peace and Resilience was signed on 24 September 2026 on the margins of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The African Development Bank published the announcement on 25 September.
The agreement brings together the Bank's development financing, policy and technical expertise with the UN's peacebuilding, prevention, political and field capacities.
The partnership will support nationally led efforts to prevent and respond to crises, address the underlying causes of fragility and strengthen peaceful, resilient and inclusive societies.
The two institutions intend to advance joint analysis and knowledge-sharing on conflict, fragility and resilience, mobilise innovative financing for peace-positive investments, and improve coordination at country, regional and global levels.
The UN Resident Coordinator system will provide an important channel for cooperation at country level, linking development financing with the work of UN agencies and national partners.
The agreement was signed by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres and African Development Bank Senior Vice-President Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade on behalf of Bank President Sidi Ould Tah.
For African countries affected by conflict and displacement, closer coordination between development and peacebuilding institutions can support efforts to link humanitarian response with longer-term recovery and institutional resilience.
The announcement establishes a cooperation framework, rather than a new country-specific funding allocation.
