Africa CDC mobilises US$1.5 million to support Kenya's Ebola response
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has mobilised approximately US$1.5 million in financial, technical and operational support for Kenya's response to the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak. The commitment followed a meeting in Nairobi on 27 October between Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya and Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, according to a joint statement.
The package includes the deployment of 10 African public health experts, laboratory reagents and diagnostic test kits, and support for surveillance, contact tracing, case management and community engagement. Media reports also cite equipment worth about US$350,000 to strengthen Kenya's Public Health Emergency Operations Centre. That detail did not appear in the Africa CDC statement reviewed.
Kenya confirmed its first imported case on 6 October. As of 26 October, WHO reports nine confirmed cases and two deaths in Kenya, with 98 contacts still in quarantine. Nigeria reported an imported case on 20 October. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 10,060 confirmed cases including 4,887 deaths had been reported as of 26 October, based on data through 25 October, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
Africa CDC's statement says Kenya's containment efforts are essential both to protect its own population and to reduce the risk of further transmission across borders, and that no country can confront a public health emergency alone. Africa CDC also convened an extraordinary virtual meeting of African health ministers on 28 October to review the outbreak and regional coordination.
The challenge now is to ensure that emergency resources reach frontline teams quickly while laboratory capacity, trained personnel and information sharing are sustained throughout the response.
