Uganda’s leadership of the EAC comes with urgent reforms aimed at fixing funding gaps and accelerating regional integration.

The East African Community (EAC) is entering a critical phase of reform, with Uganda assuming leadership at a time when the bloc faces both opportunity and institutional strain.

At the center of the reform agenda is a push to address chronic funding shortfalls and improve compliance among member states. Leaders are also prioritizing the removal of non-tariff barriers, which continue to limit intra-regional trade despite years of integration efforts.

Under Uganda’s chairmanship, the EAC is expected to accelerate implementation of policies that move beyond agreements on paper to tangible economic outcomes. This includes strengthening coordination across sectors such as trade, infrastructure, and labor mobility.

The stakes are high. With an expanded membership and growing economic ambitions, the EAC must now prove it can deliver on its promise of a truly integrated regional market.
