120 frontline health workers trained from eight countries to strengthen outbreak preparedness in the East African Region
Arusha, Tanzania — 23 September 2026
The East African Community (EAC) has stepped up regional efforts to strengthen preparedness for high-consequence infectious disease outbreaks, with 120 doctors, nurses and other frontline health professionals from all eight Partner States undertaking specialised training in Nairobi.
Announced on 23 September 2026, the initiative is supported by the Government of Germany and delivered under the Training in the East African Community for High-Consequence Infectious Diseases (tEACh) programme, a partnership between the EAC and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The training focuses on improving frontline capacity to detect, contain and clinically manage dangerous infectious diseases, including Ebola. It brings together health professionals from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
The programme addresses a regional public health challenge: infectious disease outbreaks can cross national borders, placing pressure on health systems that may have differing levels of surveillance, laboratory capacity and clinical preparedness.
Developing a trained workforce across Partner States is intended to strengthen the ability of health services to respond to outbreaks and improve coordination between countries.
The EAC has also called for additional support to ensure that frontline health workers across the region have the skills and resources required to respond effectively.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to improve regional health security and reduce the risk that localised outbreaks develop into larger public health emergencies.
