WHO Backs Kenya's Next Phase of Universal Health Coverage Reform
NAIROBI, Kenya — 19 August 2026
Kenya's health sector is entering a new phase of reform focused on translating universal health coverage commitments into measurable improvements in access, quality and financial protection.
The World Health Organization joined more than 5,000 participants at the Kenya Health Summit 2026, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on 18–19 August under the theme “Reforms Delivered, Health as a Right.” The summit brought together national and county governments, Parliament, development partners, private-sector actors, civil society and communities.
The gathering provided an opportunity to assess progress toward universal health coverage while identifying priorities for the next phase of health-sector reform.
The significance lies in the breadth of the reform agenda. Universal health coverage is not simply about expanding health facilities; it requires sustainable financing, an adequate workforce, reliable medicines and technologies, effective primary healthcare and systems that protect households from financial hardship.
Kenya is also pursuing local manufacturing of health products and technologies, alongside measures to improve maternal and newborn health and strengthen preparedness for health emergencies.
For East Africa, Kenya's experience is important because health systems across the region face similar pressures: constrained financing, workforce gaps, changing disease patterns and growing demand for quality services.
The summit therefore provides a regional learning opportunity as well as a national policy platform.
The central development question is whether reforms can move beyond policy announcements to produce more accessible, affordable and accountable healthcare, particularly for communities that remain underserved.
