East Africa Health Report

Kampala | 08 June 2026

World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has urged Uganda to reconsider its temporary closure of border points with the Democratic Republic of Congo following concerns over Ebola transmission.

Speaking during a visit to an Ebola treatment and isolation facility in Kampala, Dr. Tedros emphasized that broad travel restrictions have historically shown limited effectiveness in controlling outbreaks and can disrupt trade, livelihoods, and access to healthcare services.

Ugandan authorities recently introduced additional border measures following reports of continued transmission in eastern Congo.

WHO continues to recommend targeted surveillance, screening, contact tracing, and rapid response mechanisms rather than broad travel bans.

Health officials noted that cross-border movement remains a key consideration in outbreak management given the extensive trade and family connections between communities on both sides of the border.
