UNICEF Warns Climate Hazards Are Disrupting Children’s Health Across Eastern and Southern Africa

Nairobi | 16 June 2026

UNICEF has warned that children across Eastern and Southern Africa are facing overlapping climate hazards that are disrupting essential services, including health, water, sanitation and nutrition.

In a press release issued on 16 June, UNICEF said more than 65 million children in the region, close to one in four, are already exposed to three or more overlapping climate hazards. The most prevalent combination identified in the report is drought, fire and heatwaves.

UNICEF said climate shocks are affecting services children rely on for survival, health and learning. The agency cited risks including disruption of water and sanitation systems, increased exposure to disease, nutritional stress, displacement and reduced access to basic services.

The warning is particularly relevant for countries in East Africa where drought, flooding, food insecurity and disease outbreaks continue to place pressure on public health systems.

The report adds to growing evidence that climate change is now a child health and health systems issue, not only an environmental concern.
