Uganda receives maternal and newborn equipment worth 2.2 billion shillings for 31 health facilities

Kampala, 7 July 2026

Uganda's Ministry of Health, together with Rotary District 9213, flagged off the distribution of maternal and newborn care equipment worth approximately 2.2 billion Ugandan shillings to 31 high volume public health facilities across 14 districts. The equipment, procured under the Empowering Families, Growing Futures programme, a Rotary Foundation Global Grant implemented as the Mama Toto Care Uganda project, will be distributed to 16 health centre IVs and 15 health centre IIIs.

State Minister for Primary Health Care Charles Ayume flagged off the consignment at the ministry's headquarters, saying the investment would strengthen emergency obstetric and newborn care at some of the country's busiest facilities. The equipment includes delivery beds, radiant warmers, patient monitors, baby cots, phototherapy machines, newborn resuscitation units and kangaroo mother care chairs.

Richard Mugahi, Commissioner for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health at the ministry, said Uganda's under five maternal mortality rate has fallen from higher historical levels to 140 per 1,000 deaths, and that the donation is intended to help the country reach a target of 70 per 1,000 deaths by 2030. He said health workers under the programme are undergoing specialised training in essential newborn care and the Helping Mothers Survive programme to manage complications including postpartum haemorrhage.
