DAR ES SALAAM — June 2026

Tanzania has invested 56 million dollars in tourism infrastructure upgrades across its southern safari circuit, targeting Nyerere, Ruaha, and Mikumi national parks. Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's largest, has received investments in visitor accommodation, ecological monitoring facilities, and airport infrastructure. Mikumi National Park has benefited from new visitor facilities and airstrip improvements. Additional infrastructure and equipment valued at more than 12 million dollars is supporting the rehabilitation of more than 1,200 kilometres of roads and upgrades to seven airstrips across the circuit.

The southern safari circuit has historically received far fewer international visitors than the northern circuit anchored by Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, despite containing comparable biodiversity. The investment targets that gap, with Nyerere National Park, previously known as Selous Game Reserve, forming the centrepiece. Tanzania's tourism sector has been identified by the government as a key driver of economic development and job creation. The country's economy is projected to grow by approximately 6.2 percent in 2026, according to the World Bank's Global Economic Prospects report, with tourism and minerals among the core contributors. The upgrades align with Tanzania's broader strategy of expanding multi-destination travel experiences in partnership with the wider East African Community tourism framework.
