South Sudan: 7.8 Million Face Acute Food Insecurity as Famine Risk Persists in Four Counties
JUBA, June 2026 —
Four counties in South Sudan face a credible risk of Famine through July 2026, according to the FAO-WFP Hunger Hotspots report released in mid-June. The counties of Luakpiny/Nasir, Ulang, Akobo, and Nyirol are at highest risk, contingent on a renewed escalation of conflict, further displacement, and reduced humanitarian access.
Overall, 7.8 million people representing 55 percent of the South Sudanese population are projected to face Crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity between April and July 2026 under IPC Phase 3 or above. Of these, 2.5 million are at Emergency level and approximately 73,000 face Catastrophe conditions.
IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix describes South Sudan as facing a severe humanitarian crisis characterised by extensive internal displacement, driven by communal clashes, land disputes, insecurity, violence, disasters, and cross-border movements. Military escalation in Jonglei State involving the South Sudan People's Defence Forces and armed groups continued in early 2026, triggering further displacement, according to IOM reporting. The overlap of food insecurity, internal displacement, and armed conflict continues to limit humanitarian access in the most affected areas. FAO and WFP warn that the international community faces a narrowing window to prevent widespread death and total collapse of livelihoods in the most critical hotspot areas.
