The East African Development Brief

Nairobi | 08 June 2026

Food security agencies have warned that millions of people across Eastern Africa remain vulnerable to hunger despite improved agricultural conditions in some areas.

The latest monitoring reports indicate that favorable rainfall has supported crop development in several parts of the region. However, localized drought conditions, delayed rainfall, conflict, displacement, and economic pressures continue to affect food production and household resilience.

Humanitarian agencies have noted particular concern for vulnerable communities in parts of Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and northern Kenya where food insecurity remains elevated.

Climate variability continues to complicate recovery efforts, with some areas experiencing excessive rainfall and flooding while others face rainfall deficits.

Agricultural experts have emphasized the need for continued investment in climate-resilient farming systems, irrigation infrastructure, early warning systems, and farmer support programmes.

Governments and development partners are closely monitoring conditions ahead of upcoming harvest periods.
