ADDIS ABABA, 11 June 2026.

Ethiopia's House of People's Representatives convened its 25th regular session to begin deliberations on a proposed federal budget of 2.34 trillion birr (approximately USD 14.8 billion) for the 2026/27 fiscal year.

The Council of Ministers, at its 56th regular meeting on 9 June, had unanimously approved the budget and referred it to Parliament. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, presenting the budget, stated that Ethiopia is increasingly being viewed as a potential global economic hub following implementation of the country's comprehensive macroeconomic reform programme.

The draft budget was referred to the Standing Committee on Planning, Budget and Finance Affairs for detailed examination.

The proposed budget represents a 21 percent increase over the preceding fiscal year and projects a deficit of 308.6 billion birr, with the government planning to cover the majority domestically. The IMF's 2026 Country Report on Ethiopia projects real GDP growth of 9.2 percent for the current fiscal year.

The budget allocates regional subsidies across all states, with Oromia receiving the largest share at 179 billion birr, followed by Amhara at 112 billion birr.

Bloomberg reported that the budget frames a deficit of 1.4 percent of GDP in the coming fiscal year. Separately, the Invest in Ethiopia 2026 Forum, held earlier this year, concluded with investment agreements exceeding USD 13 billion, according to the Ethiopian Investment Commission.
